BlockChess is clearly inspired by some giants that have come before. Primarily, there is the set designed by Josef Hartwig while at the Bauhaus School in Germany. Walter Gropius, a founder of the school, taught that an object should be: practical, durable, inexpensive and beautiful. Josef's design was all of these things and more. The simplified figures themselves are a constant reminder of how each piece moves.
Then of course, there is a confluence of influences from some of my favorite and super talented folks in the world. House Industries, Invisible Creature, and Uncle Goose Toys.
